If you ask Kai Schätzel, owner of the Schätzel estate who his role models are he will reply Mother Nature and Father Rhine.
Nature guides Kai’s approach to vine cultivation in the vineyard and winemaking, along with co-Cellar Master Madeline Stössel, in the winery. The view is that as nature changes, so must wine production methods adapt. Schätzel farms to biodynamic principles growing its fruit slowly with smaller grapes. This results in low alcohol wines that are delicate and true to their origins, with sumptuously long aging potential.
Riesling is Kai’s love followed by Silvaner. Schätzel joined the VDP in 2016 and produces between 60,000 and 80,000 bottles a year. Varietals include Spätburgunder, Müller-Thurgau and others.
