Fourth-generation vintner Sebastian Schäfer has his hand in every part of his family winery’s operation: in the vineyard, the cellar and the office. This hands-on approach brings out unique, premier wines from the estate’s clay soils dotted with slate, quartzite and pebbles.

For Sebastian, terroir is the king at Joh. Bapt. Schäfer and he is especially proud of how this expresses in his wines, reflecting one of the most prestigious wine-growing areas in Germany.

Riesling is his love, and he is passionate about developing wines from this varietal in the traditional fashion in large fuders. This step, he says, teases out the character of individual wines and completes what has been started in the vineyard.

Joh. Bapt. Schäfer joined the VDP in 2013 and produces 50,000 bottles a year.
